Second London General Hospital
St Mark's College, 552 King's Road, Chelsea
1914-1919
Located at St Mark's College Chelsea and the adjoining secondary school. In order to establish a hospital, additional sanitary annexes had to be built and structural alterations made. The wards located on two floors, differed in size and were able to accommodate 260 patients. Beds for 66 officers and 995 other ranks.The nurses quarters and dining room were located on the third floor and the kitchens in the basement. The surgical area with 260 beds was housed in the school building. A fully equipped Operating Theatre was installed and by mid September 1914, the hospital was ready to receive and treat patients. Within a few weeks over 200 wounded had been received.
The Second General became to main hospital for ophthalmic cases.
